This list is designed for software engineering graduates from Griffith University, in order to keep in touch and utilise the network that has been created throughout the course.
It would be appreciated if you kept the following posting guidelines in mind:
- Do not post attachments to the list; if you have a funny joke or picture, upload it to a site (or find the URL for the original) and post the link
- Try not to use HTML email (ie please post in plain text)
- Trim the recipient list if you are sending forwards
- Cut out irrelevant text, and only leave the part of the post that you are discussing
- Don't send posts where the only real comment amounts to 'me too'
- Reply with your comments below the section of the post you are commenting on, rather than all at the top of the email with the forwarded message underneath
- Keep the name of the last poster in the email (that is the 'someone wrote:' line); this is not always necessary but when arguments or personal opinions come out it can be useful if the original poster is not obvious
- Keep .sig files to 8 lines or less, preferably around 4
- Give spoiler warnings: if you are going to give away the plot of a new book, film or TV show include 'spoiler warning' in the subject and/or give a few lines of blank space at the beginning of the email so that people who do not wish to know the plot may avoid having it spoilt
- If posting information from a popular webportal such as Slashdot, please mention this in the subject line so that regular visitors can skip this post '/. Microsoft sucks' might be a good subject line in this case
- If a conversation has been going for some time and the topic is very different to the subject... change the subject line
- Keep an eye on the limit of your inbox, if you are over quota a message comes back regarding undelivered mail for every post on the list
- Please use full English and not IRC/SMSspeak (such as C U L8R)
- Do not attack people personally or start flame wars
- Please don't start the kind of conversations likely to induce flame wars, such as negative comments on politics, religion, sexuality etc. If you really feel the need to go ahead but I reserve the right to shut down the conversation at the slightest hint of a problem
- Try not to post anything that could get the list in trouble, such as items of dubious legality
- Remember at all times this is a public forum, if you wouldn't say something out loud don't say it in a post, as records can always come back to haunt you
On the more positive side:
- Feel free to discuss anything on the list you feel is of interest to the group
- Do post items such as social events, upcoming news of jobs or other matters that continue the Griffith SE network
- Do tell others who may be interested in the list to join (including faculty members, current/past students etc)
- Give suggestions to me that you feel could improve the function of the list, such as websites and other community resources or better ways to administer the list
- Posting of new websites, work, writing etc is a good way to get honest feedback from people with a similar background and gives the other subscribers something to do when bored at work ;)
